What causes the gummy smile. The major cause is over development of the upper jaw, the front aspect of the upper jaw, what we call a premaxilla. When you have extra growth of the upper jaw that causes the gummy smile showing excessive amount of the gum tissue. In addition, sometimes you have short upper lip or hyper mobile lip, which is a hyperactivity of the muscles pulling the lip too far up, and that more or less the causes of the gummy smile.
